The top ranked basic cable networks, described as a favorite channel among viewers age 18+, were: ID (51%), Nat Geo (50%), Hallmark Channel (50%), Food Network (49%), HGTV (49%), Travel Channel (49%), Comedy Central (49%), Nickelodeon (48%), Bravo (47%), and Disney Channel (47%). Top ranked digital basic networks were MotorTrend (53%), INSP (52%), Discovery Life (51%), American Heroes (50%), and Science (50%).
Networks that viewers A25-54 said they especially like to watch during the pandemic were cable’s Bravo (57%), Food Network (56%), Nat Geo (56%), Travel Channel (56%), Discovery Channel (54%), CNN (53%), Oxygen (53%), Hallmark Channel (52%), ESPN (52%), MSNBC (52%), MTV (52%) and CNBC (52%). The final group of guest hosts for season 37 of “Jeopardy!” includes “GMA” anchors Robin Roberts and George Stephanopoulos; “Celebrity Jeopardy!” champ David Faber; and sportscaster Joe Buck. Also onboard is LeVar Burton, which should please the close to 250,000 people who signed a Change.org petition to have the “Reading Rainbow” host named as permanent replacement for the late “Jeopardy!” great, Alex Trebek.
The Walt Disney Company and Sony Pictures Entertainment announced a multi-year content licensing agreement for US streaming and TV rights to Sony Pictures’ new theatrical releases across Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution’s portfolio of platforms. The deal covers theatrical releases from 2022-2026 and begins for each film following its Pay 1 TV window. The agreement builds upon the companies’ prior arrangement, which saw SPE movies licensed to FX in the post-Pay 1 TV window. The deal also grants rights to number of SPE’s library titles, ranging from the “Jumanji” and “Hotel Transylvania” franchises to Marvel characters films.
Standard General is continuing its proxy fight against Tegna, with a letter to shareholders that was a response to a rebuttal presentation filed by Tegna. Standard General called the presentation “deeply flawed” because the pure-play TV broadcaster benchmarked itself against companies with significant non-television assets. Responded Tegna, “Standard General’s latest unfounded attacks ignore what matters to shareholders: Tegna is delivering record performance, building on its already strong record in ESG and DE&I, and shares are trading this month at all-time highs.”
Game show “Floor Is Lava” scored a season two renewal from Netflix. According to Netflix, 37 million members tuned in to the game show during its first four weeks.

After 12 seasons with the New England Patriots, wide receiver Julian Edelman and Coast Productions partner Assaf Sissa have inked a first-look deal with ViacomCBS that includes Edelman joining “Inside the NFL” as an analyst. It will be the show’s 43rd season, and first on Paramount+. The agreement also calls for Coast Productions, which worked with Showtime Sports on documentary “100%: Julian Edelman,” to develop scripted and unscripted programming across ViacomCBS properties.
Hulu handed a straight-to-series order for comedy series sequel “How I Met Your Father,” from Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger (“This Is Us”). Hilary Duff (“Younger”) will star and serve as a producer. “How I Met Your Mother” creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas will executive produce alongside Aptaker and Berger. 20th Television, which produced the original, will serve as the studio.
Casting note: Fox’s reboot of “Fantasy Island” will include Kiara Barnes (“The Bold and the Beautiful”) in a series regular role, and John Gabriel Rodriquez (“If Loving You Is Wrong”) as heavily recurring.

Starz picked up period drama “Death and Nightingales,” starring Matthew Rhys (“The Americans”), Jamie Dornan (“The Fall”) and Ann Skelly (The Nevers”), for a May 16 launch. Red Arrow Studios International also sold the show to HBO Europe for CEE, the Nordics, Spain and Portugal, Sky Network Television for New Zealand, and Yes for Israel. DirecTV picked up the series for all Latin American markets excluding Brazil.
Season three of Netflix’s “Master of None” will arrive in May, according to a new teaser from the streamer. The comedy starring Aziz Ansari last aired in 2017.
OWN’s “David Makes Man,” about the pressures facing a rising businessman, returns for season two on Tuesday, June 22 at 9p.

The Weather Channel has announced the Pattrn Earth Film Challenge, a short film competition aimed at engaging the next generation of filmmakers in storytelling projects that educate on the topic of climate change. The inaugural call for submissions opens today, Earth Day. The competition will culminate in the fall, when the finalist films will be screened and promoted across various Pattrn and Weather Channel platforms, including TV.
Sundance smash “CODA,” a drama following the sole hearing member of a deaf family, will premiere in theaters and on Apple TV+ on August 13. Apple snapped up the film for $25 million.
E!’s Academy Awards red carpet coverage includes a “Brunch at the Oscars” special followed by “Live From E!: Oscars 2021?”, starting at 3p on Sunday, April 25.
Disney and Pixar short “22 vs. Earth” debuts on Disney+ on Friday, April 30. The short is set before the events of 2020 feature film “Soul.” “While making ‘Soul,’ we talked about the why of a new soul not wanting to live on Earth, but it didn’t ultimately belong in that movie,” said director Kevin Nolting. “‘22 vs. Earth’ was a chance to explore some of the unanswered questions we had about why 22 was so cynical. As a fairly cynical person myself, it felt like perfect material.”
Antenna TV is cleaning up with a “Maid-for-a-Day” Mother’s Day marathon starting Sunday, May 9 at 5a. The lineup will include episodes of 1961-66 sitcom “Hazel.”

Roku has rebranded the Quibi titles it acquired from the shuttered startup as Roku Originals. Major League Baseball is encouraging regional sports networks to look into selling OTT service to fans. “What we’re trying to do now is work with those RSNs to figure out what type of structure would make sense for an over-the-top product that may not require authentication,” said MLB’s Chief Operations and Strategy Officer Chris Marinak during the Stream TV Sports Summit.

ProVantageX has partnered with FreeWheel, A Comcast Company, to integrate their local TV automation and optimization software into FreeWheel’s Strata ad management platform. The integration allows users of Strata, which delivers converged video solutions and partnership capabilities to over 1,100 agencies, to receive output from PVX, a full, end-to-end platform for buyers and sellers of local television that automates ratings estimating, schedule optimization, activation and stewardship.
The US ad market expanded 24.7% in March 2021 versus the same month last year, when the pandemic hit hard, and was up 7.2% versus March 2019, more than making up for 2020 declines, according to Standard Media Index. The data is processed from ad spending by agencies representing 90% of US ad spending.
Many advertisers elevated their branded content and influencer marketing programs as the pandemic and social justice movement disrupted advertising-as-usual, according to Advertiser Perceptions’ Branded Content and Influencer Marketing Report. Throughout the second half of 2020, 32% increased spending on branded content and 25% spent more to back influencers, putting 20% of their digital budgets into these complementary practices, which is more than they put into paid search (14%), display (13%), paid social (12%), or digital video (12%). “Many advertisers returned from lockdowns without their supply systems fully in place, so they had to prioritize upper-funnel activity again,” said Sarah Bolton, EVP/Business Intelligence at Advertiser Perceptions. “Because it seemed insensitive to hard-sell products, they leaned on influencer marketing to drive awareness and humanize their brands.”

Hat Trick International secured international sales for thriller “Bloodlands.” A second season, with an increased number of six episodes, has already been commissioned. The crime drama has been sold to 25 countries including Canal+ France, RTE Ireland, Sony Pictures Entertainment’s AXN Mystery Japan, SBS Australia, VRT Belgium, C-More Scandinavia, NPO Netherlands, with AMC Networks’ streaming service Acorn TV securing the series for the US and Canada.
Gestmusic, a Banijay Iberia company, will produce “Onliners and Old Timers” (“Canvi de Xip”) in collaboration with Catalan Ministry of Culture for TV3. The social experiment pairs tech-savvy millennials with older technophobes, as they attempt to enter the 21st century.
Screen Glue’s latest commission for CBBC is “Don’t Blame Me, Blame My Brain.” The series for kids aged 7-11 sets out to answer questions like, can we talk with dogs, and what would happen if we never went to sleep.

CNN drew the most viewers for the verdict of Derek Chauvin. Between 4:30-6:30 on Tuesday, the cable news net drew over 4 million viewers and 1.459 million among A25-54, according to early Nielsen data. ABC News came in second with slightly fewer total viewers and 980,000 in the demo. Fox News was next with 3.442 million total viewers/742,000 A25-54; followed by MSNBC with 3.066 million/562,000 A25-54; and CBS News with 3.017 viewers and 682,000 A25-54.
The Academy of Country Music Awards joined the pack of awards shows drawing record low ratings, with 6.3 million viewers for ABC’s Sunday broadcast, down from 6.6 million in 2020, according to Nielsen.
